MHS Band scores big! 91 Division 1 Medals

This past Friday January 31, 2014 the Mission High School Band and Jazz members represented MHS at the UIL Region Solo and Ensemble contest, which is the gateway to the U.I.L. Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition that is held at UT-Austin in late May. The students performed superbly and represented MHS with great poise and brought distinction to Mission High School. One big distinction is over 91 division 1 medals were achieved by the students in either the solo or ensemble competition.

In all there were 41 Class 1 (collegiate level) solos that received first division ratings. Of which 36 of these students advanced to the state level of competition.

Then there were 12 Class 2 (Intermediate level) solos that received a first division rating. Also, there were 7 Class 3 (entry level) solos that received a first division rating.

In total Mission HS had a combined SOLO first division medal count of 60.

The band also fielded two Brass Quintets and one Clarinet Quartet. Below are the members and music performed. All three ensembles qualified for state level competition as well:

• Jesus Olivares
• Alyssa Perez
• Marlen Villarreal

The MHS Jazz Ensemble (16 students) also attained the coveted first division rating for their performance of a three piece set featuring Windance, Katy, and Kickstart. Congratulations MHS Jazz Band!

In total Mission HS had a combined Ensemble first division medal count of 31.
